Kim Thayil (Soundgarden) guitar rig

Kim Thayil provided the guitar grunt for alt-rock-grunge icons Soundgarden. His guitar style sounds as if it were inspired as much by Black Sabbath as the Sex Pistols and the Ramones. His wah drenched lead on “Fourth of July” from the Superunknown album is one of my all time favourites.

Guitar wise, Thayil used a Guild S100 (or variation on the S100) throughout his time in Soundgarden. The Guild S100 can be heard on every Soundgarden release. In the early days in particular, Thayil used a ‘74 Guild S-1.

In a November 1996 interview with Guitar One, Thayil was asked why he preferred the Guild S100.

When I was eighteen I bought a Guild S100. It was affordable, light, and I liked the action on the neck. I’ve pretty much been using that for seventeen years. The stock pickups are really hot and the tuning keys that came with it were very easy to tune and keep in tune, which is good for beginning guitarists.

Other guitars Thayil has also reported to have used in the studio include a Gibson Les Paul Custom Lite, Gibson Firebird, Gibson Les Paul, Gibson SG, Fender Jaguar, Fender ‘59 Telecaster.

In the early days of Soundgarden Thayil actually used a Bass Ampeg amplifier with a 15″ speaker.

On Badmotorfinger Thayil was reported as using a Peavey VTM-120, 65-watt Music Man HD130 and Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier. His Peavey heads can be seen in the image below.

In a September 1990 interview with Guitar For The Practicing Musician Thayil was asked what sort of amplifiers he liked.

I like Fenders a lot because they get the low end, a really full tone out of it. But there are some Marshalls I’ve played that I like. For the record, I used a Music Man and sometimes Mesa-Boogie. I use this 4xl2 cabinet. I have two Guild S-l’s and one Les Paul, and this Epiphone thing that I imagine will be sacrificed before the tour’s over. We’ve got it as a backup, because we’ve broken a couple guitars and a bass.

For the Down on the Upside album, Thayil used a variety of amplifiers, however a Mesa Dual Recifier was used on a majority of the albums leads. Thayil expanded on this in a 1996 interview with Guitar Player magazine.

I used a lot of different amps. I used Mesa Dual Rectifiers for leads, but for rhythms we used a new line of Mesa 50-watt Mavericks, an old Fender Super, a Fender Princeton, Fender Twin Reverbs and Vibro-Kings, and an old Orange head. There were also a couple of preamp boxes we used for direct stuff, an Intellitronics LA-2 and a Summit.

In terms of his amplifier settings, Thayil stated that he turned the low end up, set the midrange to around 11 o’clock and the treble at around 2 o’clock.

I started doing that because during the first few years that we played together I was using an Ampeg bass amp with a 15″ speaker, so I’d crank the high end all the way up, drop out the mids and keep the low end there for feedback and the big woof.

In a July 1996 interview with Guitar Player magazine, Thayil was asked about some of the effect used on “Applebite” from the Down on the Upside album. For the subtle pitch-modulation effect Thayil used a Jim Dunlop Rotovibe in the Rotovibe setting, as opposed to the chorus setting. The whistling guitar sound, almost akin to a Moog synth, is actually a Mu-Tron phase shifter.

Whilst Thayil used a Dunlop CryBaby for a majority of his time with Soundgarden, a Colorsound wah was also used a few time on the Down on the Upside album.

Thayil also used a couple of different Chorus pedals with Soundgarden, including an MXR Chorus. A Boss CE2 Chorus also seems to have been used at times, as can be seen in the image above. There are also two DOD FX-10 Bi-fet Preamps, and possibly a DOD flanger of some sort (although that is just a guess).

Brian Molko (Placebo) guitar rig

Brian Molko, vocalist and guitarist for alt-art-rock band Placebo, is known for his cutting guitar tone and bizarre tunings. Listening to some Placebo tracks you’d be forgiven for guessing that his guitar signal went through a gargantuan rack setup, but this is not the case.

Molko uses a range of guitars, but is more often than not seen with either a Gibson SG, Fender Jaguar and more recently Gretsch Duo Jets.

During the “Without you I’m nothing” era, Molko favoured Pre CBS Fender Jaguars, tuned (low to high) F, Bb, Eb, G#, C , C, as well as other non-standard tunings.

A Fender Jaguar was on the track, Pure Morning, for example, whilst Gibson SGs were used on the other big name single from the ‘Without You I’m Nothing’ album, Every You Every Me.

For “In Sleeping With Ghosts” a Fender Thinline Telecaster was also used occasionally.

Gretsch Duo Jets began making appearance during the “Meds” era, most notably on the track, Special K.

Throughout his career the Fender Twin Reverb amplifier has been a main stay. Molko was also said to have used the Marshall 6100LM Anniversary model head during the “Without you I’m nothing” era, primarily for the distorted tones. More recently the 6100LM seems to have been replaced with a Marshall JCM900 fitted with 5881 power tubes.

In an August 1999 interview with Alternative Press, Molko was asked him about his [then] current guitar setup:

I’ve got three Fender Jaguars, one Fender Jazz master and two Gibson SG’s, and they’re all older than me. That’s very important. The Jags are all women, and they all have names: “Bitch,” “Goddess” and “Tattoo”. For amps I use a Marshall stack and a Fender Twin to get a fuller, richer sound. My effects setup is simple: Boss delay and Roger Mayer Voodoo Distortion; and I use the built-in overdrive on the Marshall. Occasionally our sound guy will put a Leslie [rotary speaker] effect or a big My Bloody Valentine kind of reverb effect on my guitar.

In an April 1999 interview with Guitar Player magazine Molko talked about some of the gear used in the studio.

The band also uses effects processors like makeup — bending the gender of their guitars so you’re sometimes not sure whether it’s a guitar or a keyboard you’re hearing. On Without You I’m Nothing (Virgin), Placebo dolled up their guitar tones with a Pro Co RAT, Mutron flanger, Alesis Quadraverb, Boss DD-5 Digital Delay, Roger Mayer distortion, and a Sovtek Big Muff. They also used a Sherman Filterbank for the synthetic-sounding feedback on

‘Every You, Every Me’, an Eventide H3500 preset called Cool Prez for the watery opening guitar on ‘You Don’t Care About Us,’ and a Lovetone Big Cheese, to give songs a “real hyper-chaotic exploding speaker sound.”

Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) guitar rig

Jonny Greenwood, lead guitarist for Radiohead, has recorded some of the most instantly recognizable guitar tones of all time, with the outro solo on Paranoid Android, from the OK Computer album, a shining example.

Greenwood’s guitar rig is a relatively traditional one, for someone that has carved out their name as creating futuristic, trippy tones.

Guitar wise, Greenwood favours Fender Telecasters for the most part. He’s often seen playing either a Fender Telecaster Plus, or a Fender Telecaster Standard, both modified with custom kill switches, and fitted with Lace Sensor pickups. He is said to use a Blue Lace Sensor pick-up in the neck position and a dual Red Lace Sensor pick-ups in the bridge position. The dual Red Lace Sensors are wired up like a traditional humbucker. These guitars featured heavily on Radiohead’s earlier work, with a Fender Starcaster, a bizarre looking guitar from the 70’s getting some heavy use for Kid A and Amnesiac.

In the earlier years he used a Fender Twin Reverb for clean tones and a Fender Deluxe 85 (a solid state amp from the 80’s) for distorted tones. Now days, his amplifier line up features a Vox AC30 for clean tones, and a Fender Eighty Five (solid state) for distorted tones. The silver footswitch (a Vox Silver Egg footswitch) that sits just below the second board is used to switch on and off the Roland Space Echo RE-201 unit. The Space Echo itself is not technically a pedal, but a vintage tape machine the produces delay and reverb effects. Greenwood has used the RE-201 extensively across numerous Radiohead recordings for heavy delay/echo effects that tend to modulate slightly. You can hear the RE-201 on tracks such as Subterranean Homesick Alien, Airbag and Exit Music. I have read recently that he has replaced the RE-201 in his live rig with a BOSS RE-20 Space Echo due to technical issues that you’d associate with older tape machines.

Skwisgaar Skwigelf (Dethklok) guitar rig

Skwisgaar Skwigelf, lead guitarist for extreme metal band Dethklok is also known as “The Fastest Guitarist Alive”. Skwigelf’s hands have been appraised by insurance companies as worth ten-billion dollars, or one billion per finger.

In his “Advanced Fast Hand Finger Wizard Master Class”, Skwigelf states that his Gibson Explorer features EMG 81 and EMG 85 pickups, and his hardware includes Krank Revolution and Krankenstein amplifiers, multiple Krank Krankenstein guitar cabinets.

No doubt this gear was used throughout the bands 2007 album, The Dethalbum.

Skwigelf elaborated a little further on his gear of choice in a July 2006 interview with the IGN website:

Q: What kind of gear do you use?

Skwisgaar Skwigelf: Gibson guitars. I stick with my Explorer and Toki usually plays a V, Krank amps- right now I’m using the KRANKENSTIEN, Line 6 pedals, Digidesign plug ins. We gots endorsement deals with alls of them. We can wrecks dem all- they just give us more.

In the same interview, Skwigelf also spoke about what it was like to be the fastest guitar player in the world, and what he does to relax.

Q: The band has both the world’s fastest and second-fastest guitarists alive in it. Is that a bit of overkill?

Skwisgaar Skwigelf: Not at all. As the fastest guitarist, I prefer to have someone a little worse at guitar in the band, like Toki. Because I think you would takes it for granted that I am the best. Like you get used to a room filled with the smell of roses until you go into a room with a rotting corpse smell - then you go back to the roses room and extra appreciates it a greats degrees better.

Q: Any thought about solo projects? What does Dethklok do to relax?

Matt Bellamy (Muse) guitar rig

Matt Bellamy, guitarist and vocalist for the band Muse, is arguably one of the most creative and influential musicians to emerge in the past decade. His unique approach to recording and use of effects has inspired a whole new breed of guitarists. Bellamy’s gear is every bit as eclectic as his music.

In terms of guitars, Bellamy favours Manson six-string guitars, with the exception of a seven-string model used live for Citizen Erased which is tuned to: AADDGBE.

Prior to using the Diezel VH4, Bellamy was known to use a Marshall JCM2000 DSL.

Effects wise, Bellamy’s rig has evolved from a more traditional pedal board into amp set up, into a technological beast.

In the early days, during the Showbiz/Origin of Symmetry era, his pedal board included a Digitech Whammy, Line 6 DL4, Roland V-Synth, DOD Equalizer, Zvex Fuzz Factory, Electro Harmonix Micro Synth.

For live vocals, Bellamy uses Neumann KMS 105’s. The vocal signal can be fed through an Avalon VT737 for a warmer subtle distorted vocal tone, or through a SansAmp GT2 switched via custom control switch operated by Bellamy for extreme distortion. The vocal signal also travels through a variety of other rack gear, including a TC Electronic Delay Unit, H35000 Harmonizer and System 6000 reverb.

James “Munky” Shaffer (Korn) guitar rig

Keeping an up to date list of the gear Korn’s number one guitarist, Munky, uses would be a full time job. As you’d expect, if you’ve listened to any Korn albums, Munky uses a lot of effects pedals to sculpt his signature sound.

Although the exact model may have varied, the one staple in Munky’s rig has been an Ibanez seven string guitar. Munky primarily uses the Ibanez K7, a custom Ibanez 7 string guitar, although recently Ibanez launched the Munky Signature guitar, the Ibanez APEX1-BBK Munky Signature model, which he now promotes.

For what it’s worth, Boss US have posted an signal flow diagram of Munky’s rig, although, as you’d expect, the only pedals that they have specifically named are the Boss products. It’s been done in the guitar geek style so you can make out what the other pedals and amps are.
