Ibanez Tube Screamer TS-9
The Ibanez Tube Screamer TS-9 is one of the most famous overdrive pedals. It takes its name from its tone, which is similar to the sound of an overdriven tube amplifier. One of the TS-9's strengths is that whilst also providing a boosted overdriven and bluesy tone, it also allows the original signal to shine through as well.
Some people use the TS-9 with solid state amps to try to replicate the sound of an old style tube amp, however, the TS-9 is at its best when put in front of a tube amp to push the preamp tubes into creamy overdrive. The TS-9 is also quite strong in the mids which can allow the guitar tone to cut through a band mix a lot stronger.
Original TS-9s (and the earlier TS-808) are highly sought after and considered the holy grail of guitar tone, thanks in part to the fact that they played a key role in Stevie Ray Vaughan's signature sound. Whilst the TS-9 has been reissued, a majority of the reissues do not contain the same parts as found in the original. That's why the TS-9 is a favourite for modifications as many people choose to convert the reissue to original specifications.
Chances are that if your favourite guitarist plays rock or blues based music, then he/she will have a TS-9 sitting on their pedal board. Well known TS-9 users include Stevie Ray Vaughan, Carlos Santana, Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) and Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam).
